WHAT IS ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY?

Oral and maxillofacial surgery is the specialty of dentistry that includes the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, injuries, and defects involving both the functional and esthetic aspects of the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial region. The term “maxillofacial” refers to the anatomic area of the jaws and face. An oral and maxillofacial residency provides extensive training in related medical and surgical disciplines such as general surgery, plastic surgery, internal medicine, critical care medicine, anesthesia, and pathology. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are trained to treat patients in hospital settings, outpatient surgery centers, ambulatory surgery facilities, and private offices.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A BOARD CERTIFIED ORAL SURGEON?

The American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS) is the certifying board for the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery in the United States. It is recognized and approved by the Council on Dental Education and Licensure of the American Dental Association. The mission of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is to assure the public of safe and optimal care through the development and maintenance of high standards of certification and re-certification of Diplomates in the specialty. To this end, the ABOMS establishes criteria for competence and knowledge that determine a sufficient and acceptable ability to safely practice the specialty.

Those individuals who demonstrate achievement of the requisite training, experience and knowledge are granted board certification, indicated by title Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. In order to become Board Certified, an individual must complete an extensive application and examination processes. Applicants to the ABOMS must provide verifiable evidence of their educational and training qualifications. Each application is carefully reviewed for proper credentials.

The process of board certification requires the candidate to pass both a thorough qualifying examination and a rigorous oral certifying examination. The ABOMS strongly encourages its Diplomates to continue their professional development through various educational experiences. Your Board Certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon is expected to maintain current competence through ongoing professional education that includes national meetings, seminars, lectures, special courses, panels, symposia, and self-assessment tools.
